An Interesting Debate

January 30, 2009

There’s an interesting debate going on at Shadow Government (with quite a bit of participation from Nikolas Gvosdev from the Washington Realist). I didn’t mention it yesterday beause, frankly, I felt somewhat insulted by Chris Boise’s statement that “no military officer worth a damn would retire after a decade or so in uniform to stamp visas in Botswana with 24-year-olds .” However, the comments have gotten somewhat interesting.
Should the State Department allow military officers (and other mid-level professionals) to be hired into upper ranks of the Foreign Service? John Naland said “no” and gave a good run-down on the Foreign Service position in this month’s issue of the Foreign Service Journal. Anyway, you can see what I had to say about the post in the comments (as TH). It’s an interesting discussion, so check it out. No comments here, but you really should go join the conversation there.
