The Internet is an Amazing Thing

January 4, 2009

I’m somewhat new to blogging and am continually learning new things about this community. Last week I decided that I could possibly learn from others’ mistakes, and sent an e-mail to the only other FSO blogger who regularly touches on policy issues, Consul-at-Arms. He gave some phenomenal advice. Well, yesterday Adventures in Bureaucracy added his two cents. I love it! CAA is something of a legend in the field–I found out about him reading the Foreign Service Journal. He’s got an excellent blog. I love it because I’d never read Adventures in Bureaucracy before, but reading a few posts today, it looks interesting as well. Anyway, if anyone reading this wants thoughtful advice, look no further. In the meantime, I’m loving this blogosphere thing.

Update: Since writing this post the internet continues to open my eyes, but perhaps not enough for a new post. Digger, who linked to the initial article, keeps a quite a blogroll. It appears CAA was the only FSO blogger touching on policy issues that I read, but it looks like Digger has been erround for nearly as long, and I’ve been doing quite a bit of reading on her blog. Also, thanks to her blogroll, I have enjoyed discovering Diplopundit’s blog immensely. Also somewhat relevant, since the initial post, The Economist posted an article that would seem to validate anonymous blogging.

I linked to CAA’s response to you here: http://lifeafterjerusalem.blogspot.com/2009/01/caa-advice-for-fso-bloggers.html

I try to keep a fairly inclusive list of FS blogs on my blogroll, so I have added your blog to my list.

He’s absolutely right about avoiding gossip. To say nothing of ranting about conjecture which happens all too often.

You need to impose intellectual self-discipline when blogging. I try my best on that front. While I don’t write thinking about Congressional Hearings (yeah, me in front of those guys and dolls. I’d be staring up at the ceilings wondering where I could buy fresh basil) I do write as if professional and intelligent people are reading.

I have found the blogging world to be an invaluable resource for networking, etc, while living abroad. There are many times when I would have definitely felt rather lost if I hadn’t had other bloggers who live here helping me out.

Speaking of the blogging world, I sort of stumbled across your blog while link-surfing. I’m an expat currently living in Korea, and my S.O. is a former FS brat. I like your blog, and I was wondering if you would mind if I added you to my blogroll?
