25 Websites that will Bring you Closer to Europe

April 21, 2009

  1. EU - The European Union website is unlike any other IO’s website. Enjoy it.
  2. AFP - French news agency. Probably the best foreign-language news agency I know of.
  3. Der Speigel - The classic German newsmagazine’s online presence.
  4. B-92 - The Serbian radio station that became world famous by broadcasting dissident news during the Milsovec era.
  5. Caucasian Review of International Affairs - CRIA is a free, quarterly journal. Check it out once every three months.
  6. Italy Magazine - A UK-based magazine about all things Italian.
  7. The New Atlanticist - The Atlantic Council’s web log is a pretty good source of NATO news.
  8. KosovaLive - A Kosovar news agency.
  9. European Affairs - A journal published by the European Institute in Washington discussing the transatlantic relationship.
  10. European Voice - The website that claims to represent the, “only weekly newspaper with an independent view of the EU.” I don’t know if it really is the only one, but it is an excellent one.
  11. The Georgian Times - This Georgian news magazine has an international focus.
  12. Jyllands-Posten - The English portion of the Danish magazine that printed those famous cartoons.
  13. The Russian Monitor - A delightful blog about mother Russia.
  14. CEJISS - The Central European Journal of International and Security Studies has interesting points of view from time to time.
  15. Cyprus Mail - A news site from Cyprus.
  16. Europe a la Carte - I’ve steered clear of travel sites so far, but can an American understand Europe without budget travel?
  17. Chechen Press - The “official” news of the Chechen Republic tends to be upset with both Russia and the rest of Europe.
  18. Steven Wordsworth - The UK Ambassador to Serbia’s blog.
  19. Radio Free Europe - Devoted to “free media in unfree societies,” RFE is a phenomenal source for Russian news.
  20. ONASA - A Bosnian news agency.
  21. Nosemonkey’s EUtopia - A blog about the EU-UK relationship that should be taken seriously, despite its name.
  22. NATO - The North-Atlantic Treaty Organization continues unabated despite the lack of a Soviet Union.
  23. The Brussels Journal - This news blog takes a conservative (in the American sense) look at European policies.
  24. CEPA - The Center for European Policy Analysis is a Washington-based think tank that specializes in central Europe.
  25. Turkey Blog - The name says it all. Oh, watch out for slightly sub-par English.

I hope you enjoy! Let me know of sites you prefer.

Thanks for mentioning Europe a la Carte which not only focuses on travel on a modest budget in Europe but also on visiting less well known destinations where you can get a more authentic feel of your destination than in a tourist hotspot.
