Today’s Wall Street Journal is Phenomenal

April 22, 2009

A lot of people have been wary of the Wall Street Journal ever since it was purchased last year.  Nevertheless, today’s issue of the WSJ is phenomenal!  Here are three articles you should read:

  • Fidel Castro Rebukes Raúl on U.S. – This has some great analysis.  Ya’ll have probably figured out that Cuba fascinates me, and this incident is no exception. I’m fascinated by this island neighbor that continues to be dominated by a long-discredited ideology.
  • Lawmaker Moves to Delay Free-Trade Pacts – Putting this article was really just an excuse for me to soap box.  Free-trade pacts with Colombia and Panama aren’t really about trade so much as they are about bi-lateral relationships.  I appreciate Brown’s rationale that we should study previous trade agreements (not that that’s what his actual motivation is, but whatever), but I think it is ridiculous (not to mention damaging to our credibility) to not ratify these agreements.  I do like the article, though for it’s great quotes.  “’No other country practices trade according to this fundamentalist, economist philosophy’ instead of pursuing policies that he said advance the country’s economic and security interests.”  Yeah, who wants an economist trade policy!?
  • Obama Blames America – I didn’t care for this article. There is something to be said for repeating the company line, but Obama was elected to change the company line.  Heaven knows I’m a supporter of the U.S., and I do think it’s the greatest country in the history of the world (no hyperbole intended).  That being said, I understand where Obama’s coming from, and while I may not agree with everything he says, I appreciate the sentiment.

But at the same time it’s Obama’s job to defend the US to the world. If there’s any american who the world would tolerate preaching to by, it’s Obama. We shouldn’t apologize for being better than all the other countries.

I didn’t realize that torturing made us better than other countries.

*chuckles* “to not ratify”? Is it ok to split infinitives on the Foreign Services Exam? lol.
