This is the first video I’ve included in this blog, but I wanted to urge you to listen to Obama “speaking the truth as best [he] can.” People frequently deride diplomacy as just talking, as words rather than deeds. In country team meetings, military and law enforcement representatives roll their eyes as FSOs argue about whether “happy” or “glad” would be better in a statement. Obama has faced similiar criticism. That being said words do matter. Please watch this speech in its entirety, it’s well worth an hour of your life. I’ve included some thoughts after the video, please feel free to scroll down, read, and, as always, comment.
Many have criticized the speech for being reminescent of Bush. He supported Israel, rejected a nuclear Iran, and pushed for human rights. Of course, Bush didn’t invent these policies either, they’re American policies, because they’re the right thing to do. The devil is in the details, and beyond the broad strokes, Obama painted a very different picture. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter.
